Gift Tax
People gift for many different reasons, whether your goal is to reduce your taxable estate, transfer wealth or assets to the next generation, donating to charity, funding a trust or for a family event or expenditure. Whatever your motive, we can help structure your gifting in the most tax effective manner and provide strategic alternatives which fit your individual situation.
One of the questions we are often asked is, “I received a gift. How much am I going to have to pay in tax on that gift?” The answer is most often “Nothing”. The donor is generally responsible for paying the gift tax (if any). Under special arrangements the recipient may agree to pay the tax instead. If you are considering this type of arrangement we can help advise if this would be advantageous to you.
If you are considering making a gift please be aware that if you are gifting above a certain amount annually you may be required to file gift tax returns with the IRS. In some circumstances it’s appropriate to file a gift tax return even if the gift is below the annual gift exclusion, for example if you are gifting into a trust that benefits a future generation. The rules can become quite complex and we can help you determine whether filing a gift tax return is appropriate.
