Is Your Financial Life Organized Enough for Someone Else to Step In?

October 26, 2026

Most of us keep our financial lives largely in our heads. We know which account pays the mortgage, where the insurance policies live and which advisor to call when a question comes up. The system works beautifully, right up until the day we are the ones who need the help.

If you have ever helped an aging parent sort out their finances, you already know how much easier everything is when it can be found. The same is true in reverse.

A short illness or simply the passing of years can leave a spouse or an adult child suddenly responsible for decisions they have never had to make. Often one person in a household keeps track of all of it while everyone else assumes it is handled. That assumption holds, until it is tested.

So, it is worth asking the question: If you were unavailable for a month, could someone you love keep things running? Would they even know where to look?

A good place to start is gathering the essentials somewhere your family knows to find them:

  • A list of accounts, institutions and the advisors who manage them
  • Insurance policies and what each one covers
  • Estate documents, including your will, powers of attorney and healthcare directives
  • Logins for the accounts that now live only online
  • The professionals you rely on and how to reach them

You do not need a perfect system. A labeled folder, a secure digital vault or one honest conversation with the people who would step in can spare them weeks of searching during an already tender time.

None of this is about expecting the worst. It is about making sure the people who would show up for you are able to. And it is a kindness to yourself too. Once it is done, you set down the nagging sense that everything depends on you remembering it all.

At Davie Kaplan, we help clients get their financial lives in order so the people they love are never left guessing.
