What Women Should Know before a Major Life Transition

October 12, 2026

Life rarely changes on a convenient schedule. Retirement, the sale of a business, a divorce, the loss of a spouse, having children or a move closer to family can arrive after years of planning or very suddenly. Some we choose and some we would never wish for, yet each one reshapes the financial ground beneath us. And more often than not, it is a woman who ends up standing on that new ground first.

The most useful thing to know is that the biggest decisions can usually wait. In the first weeks of a major change, emotions run high and thinking is cloudy, which is a poor moment to sell a home, restructure your finances or sign anything permanent. Giving yourself a season to settle, before anything becomes irreversible, tends to lead to steadier decisions later.

When you are ready, start by getting a clear view of where things stand. Knowing what you own, what you owe, what is coming in and what is going out turns a vague sense of worry into something you can actually work with.

Transitions also have a way of undoing paperwork that once made sense. A few documents are worth reviewing whenever life shifts:

  • Beneficiary designations on retirement accounts and insurance policies
  • Titles and ownership on homes and bank accounts
  • Your will, powers of attorney and healthcare directives
  • Who is authorized to act for you, and whether they are still the right choice

If a partner once handled the finances, this is the moment to build a circle of your own. An accountant, an attorney and an advisor who know your situation can carry some of the weight and make sure nothing important slips through while your attention is elsewhere.

You do not have to have every answer at the start. The goal is simply to keep your options open, so that when the time comes to decide, the choices are yours to make.

At Davie Kaplan, we help women find steady ground through life's biggest transitions.
